What is EMDR?

EMDR uses guided eye movements to lessen the emotional impact of distressing memories. Francine Shapiro developed it in the late 1980s. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recognises EMDR as a treatment for PTSD, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) also recognises it as an effective treatment for children.

 

How Did It Develop?

The discovery of EMDR began when Dr. Shapiro observed that her own eye movements seemed to reduce the intensity of her distressing thoughts. This observation led to the development of a structured therapy that uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, taps, or tones. Researchers and clinicians further refined the approach through research and clinical practice, establishing its efficacy in trauma treatment.

 

How Does It Work?

In an EMDR session, the therapist helps you recall traumatic memories while directing your eye movements in a specific pattern. This bilateral stimulation engages both sides of the brain, facilitating the processing of the memories. The goal is to reframe these memories and reduce their emotional charge, making them less distressing. Over time, this process helps change the way traumatic memories are stored in the brain. This in turn enables individuals to integrate them in a healthier way.

EMDR is highly effective for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, it is also beneficial for other conditions such as anxiety, depression, phobias, and panic disorders. It can be particularly useful for individuals who have experienced various forms of trauma, including accidents, abuse, or loss.
