Autism Assessments

A Strengths-Based, Person-Centred Approach to Autism Assessments for Adults

Autism, also referred to as Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), affects how individuals experience the world, communicate, and interact with others. Many adults seek an autism assessment after years of feeling different, struggling with social communication, or experiencing sensory sensitivities. Understanding yourself through a professional assessment can be an empowering process, providing clarity and access to the right support.

At our practice in Glasgow, Dr Louise Legg, a highly experienced psychologist with unique expertise in neurodevelopmental assessment, takes a person-centred, strengths-based approach to autism assessments. She understands that every individual is unique and ensures that the assessment process is supportive, respectful, and tailored to your specific experiences.

During the assessment, Louise will take the time to get to know you and explore your unique experience of the world. She recognises that autism presents differently in every individual and provides a compassionate, non-judgemental space where you can discuss your thoughts, feelings, and challenges.

A Strengths-Based Approach

Dr Legg’s approach is not just about identifying challenges but also recognising the unique strengths and abilities that come with being autistic. She provides a compassionate space where individuals can explore their experiences without judgment, helping them develop a positive, self-affirming understanding of their neurodivergence.

If you have ever felt different or struggled with certain aspects of life but have also had deep interests, strong attention to detail, or creative problem-solving abilities, an autism assessment can help you better understand yourself and access the right support.

What Does the Autism Assessment Involve?

Dr Legg’s autism assessments are comprehensive, evidence-based, and person-centred, ensuring that you feel heard and understood throughout the process.

  • Initial Consultation – A detailed discussion about your personal experiences, background, and what you hope to gain from the assessment.
  • Comprehensive Clinical Interview – A structured, in-depth conversation exploring your developmental history, communication patterns, routines, and sensory processing.
  • Standardised Autism Assessments – Using NICE-approved diagnostic tools to assess for autism traits.
  • Collateral Information – If appropriate, input from a family member, partner, or someone who knew you in childhood can be considered to ensure an accurate and well-rounded assessment.
  • Diagnostic Report & Feedback Session – A full written report summarising the findings, providing a diagnosis if applicable, and offering strengths-based, tailored recommendations.

The assessment is conducted over three to four appointments, typically completed within three to four weeks.

What Happens After the Assessment?

Dr Legg provides more than just a diagnosis—she helps individuals understand their strengths and challenges, supporting them in embracing their neurodivergence with confidence.

Following the assessment, you will receive:

  • A detailed explanation of the findings in a supportive, non-medicalised way.
  • Strengths-based strategies for navigating work, education, and relationships.
  • Recommendations for workplace and academic adjustments based on NICE guidelines.
  • Guidance on managing sensory sensitivities and social communication differences.
  • Referrals for additional therapy, coaching, or peer support if desired.

Even if autism is not diagnosed, the process provides meaningful insights into your experiences and helpful recommendations for moving forward.
