Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)

What is CFT?

Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is a therapeutic approach designed to help people cultivate self-compassion and alleviate shame and self-criticism. It encourages individuals to develop a kind and understanding relationship with themselves, promoting emotional healing and resilience.

How Did It Develop?

Developed by Professor Paul Gilbert, CFT integrates principles from evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, and Buddhist philosophy. It was created to support those struggling with high levels of shame and self-criticism, which traditional therapies often overlook.

How Does It Work?

In CFT, you work with a therapist to understand the origins of your self-critical thoughts. Through guided exercises, mindfulness, and imagery, you learn to replace these with compassionate responses. The therapy helps activate the soothing system in your brain, reducing stress and promoting emotional balance.

What Can It Help With?

CFT is effective for individuals dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, and eating disorders. It is particularly beneficial for those who experience intense self-criticism and struggle to feel compassion towards themselves, helping them build a more positive self-view.

Benefits of CFT

CFT offers a gentle, nurturing approach to therapy. It empowers individuals to develop self-compassion, leading to improved mental health and well-being. By focusing on kindness and understanding, CFT helps reduce feelings of shame and fosters a sense of inner peace.
